Breaking the Glass Ceiling aims to empower women by exhibiting how they are able to endure and conquer sexist pressures from daily life.
Brainstorming ideas for projects, solutions, then details
Problem
From childhood to adulthood, women are constantly faced with societal pressures and expectations of what it means to be a woman. For example, strict dress codes teach women that their appearance is meant to accommodate others; and adult women are often written off as emotional or inferior. Evidence of the negative effects of sexism can be seen in the decline of women in STEM. According to the National Girls Collaborative, even though young girls are shown to do better in advanced math and science courses, women make up less than 30% of the science and engineering workforce.
Break the Glass Ceiling aims to tackle these problems head on by teaching girls to identify the pressures around them and overcome them. The “bad boy” enemies in the game each have their own discouraging taunts and discriminatory comments that the hero avoids to stay strong on her way to break the glass ceiling. Even if you lose on your first try, get back up and keep trying until you break through!
With each level, the glass gladiator matures, as do the bad boys. Women are subjected to sexist pressures throughout their life, but by addressing them head-on in our game, users understand that they themselves have the power to do so in real life.
